Nutrition Instructor:
Cooking Matters™ program at Tarrant Area Food Bank

Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters™ is offered by Tarrant Area Food Bank to teach families how to make healthy and budget-wise food choices in an effort to reduce hunger in our 13 county service area.  Cooking Matters hands-on classes are taught in the kitchen by professional chefs and nutritionists who volunteer by teaching nutrition, cooking, and budgeting to low-income adults and children.  Class series consist of six consecutive weekly lessons, each 2 hours in length.  One-time workshops, each 2 hours in length, are also available.

Nutrition Instructor
The ideal instructor is someone with or working toward a degree in nutrition, food science, or dietetics.  Dietetic students and interns, cooperative extension agents, and diabetes educators are also encouraged to volunteer for this position. Bilingual/Spanish-speaking instructors highly valued for leading Spanish curricula.

The Nutrition Instructor’s job is to follow the goals and objectives for each lesson outlined in the curriculum, while meeting the needs of the participants.

Talking points include: the basics of MyPyramid, practical and realistic ways to eat healthy on a budget, the importance of variety in food, meal planning, reading food labels, breakfast and healthy snacks, food budgeting, and physical activity.  All supplies are provided, including a MyPyramid poster, a nutrition facts poster, 3D food models, trivia games, and worksheets. The Nutritionist should encourage active, hands-on participation in all activities and games.  Three-hour time commitment per lesson for volunteers.

Nutrition Instructor (Emphasis on Diabetes)
Mission Fort Worth

Mission Fort Worth, a free clinic located on the south side of Fort Worth, is looking for a Dietitan willing to lead a nutrition program focusing on diabetes management to a primarily Hispanic population. Nutrition program should focus on modest changes in patient's kitchens, such as switching lard for olive oil, switching red meats and pork for chicken and fish, learning to trim meats, substituting vegetables for fried rice, etc.

The Clinic is open on Wednesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Mission Fort Worth is looking for a volunteer Dietitian to teach a series of classes, once a month for 3-6 sessions this summer.
